Ray of a silver lining

Ray of a Silver Lining marble pendant highlights lightness in marble, both physically but also in the sense-experience of the user. The intention when this light was originally conceived was to transform marble from a rigid and heavy volume to a lightweight & glowing piece that almost floats within space. Adding in 2020 the “silver lining� detail, with reference to the Japanese Kintsugi and ancient quarrying techniques, was not just an approach to heritage, but an optimistic mark during times of change. It consists of a seamless volume of marble with no cables other than suspension wires. Where marble is carved, light is introduced which exposes the unique crystalline quality and vein pattern of marble. But what happens when discontinuities, like natural breaking points inherent in marble, occur? Does the volume become obsolete or is there a future for the precious rock? Since antiquity, quarry men cast streaks of bronze in any weak areas of marble slabs to reinforce them. In a similar manner, powdered gold is used as part of the Japanese art of Kintsugi to mend areas of breakage in ceramic vessels. Marrying the two processes, “Ray with a Silver Lining�, features a joint coated in silver where the marble volume had been previously broken, adding a layer to its veins and history. As such, Ray is used both as a source of light and a decorative piece. Thin and elegant it is reminiscent of a ray of light.
