Nest

Originally, the Nest paper bin was designed for the Furnishing Utopia: Hands to Work project, the third in a series of exhibitions exploring the design legacy of the Shakers. The exhibition was dedicated to the theme of the houseworks and objects we associate with them. The cork waste was a take of the classic paper container, but it was also intended to be used in general at home as magazine racks or for different types of everyday objects. The crumpled look comes from the fact that the designer wanted the product to be packaged flat during shipping, finally creating one of the salient features of this object. To better control the shape of the basket, rings were inserted at the top and bottom, giving it a perfectly round shape, while seen from the side, it has softer lines. Its double layer of thin hand-stitched cork fabric, as well as steam-bent wooden handles, define the overall quality of the object and rich details. In addition, they emphasize its two main functions: to be carried and to be folded. “The one chore I most frequently do, is tidying the apartment by putting things back to where they belong – laundry, dishes, recycling items, etc. Having the proper tools like a dedicated paper bin in the office makes these chores so much more enjoyable. I was drawn to the cork fabric material because of its natural look and its properties. The handle is a reference to Shaker buckets and baskets.” Hallgeir Holmsvedt
