Information
Our Library Chair is a contemporary re-edition of the study chair created for the university library in Chandigarh. The chair has a cane lattice seat and a solid teak back rest. A single cross bar or brace lends support to the back legs. The backrest in our edition is one notch lower than the top of the side frames, an aesthetic detail we liked in certain vintage models we studied in Chandigarh.Finishes:We offer this product in a choice of Natural Teak or Dark Stain. For Natural Teak finish, the wood is sanded to smoothness and transparent wood polish and sealer are applied with a soft cloth to bring out the natural golden brown colour of teak. For Dark Stain, a coat of teak stain is hand applied to give the wood a darker, deeper shade. We offer a choice of two types of cane weaving patterns for this product - Diamond weave and Cross weave. Diamond weave is more robust and marginally more long lasting than Cross weave. We recommend Diamond weave, especially if usage is expected to be high. We also recommend using a seat pad to increase longevity and prevent accidental breakage of cane strands. With care and good usage, cane weaves can last for several years without any breakage.Project Chandigarh is our homage to Indian Modernism, a style and philosophy of making that manifested in Chandigarh in the 1950s. Our re-editions's of these mid-century designs use the same craftsmanship and philosophy of making that was used for three decades in Chandigarh. The nuances and details that make these designs special – finger joints, curvatures, grooves – are retained while improving the pieces structurally and materially. The natural rattan cane used for the seats and backs are peeled and woven by hand, by highly skilled weavers just like in the vintage pieces.
