POPEYE is a limited edition of covers for the BRUNO and WANDA lamps manufactured in collaboration with King Features, displaying the most recognised iconographies of vintage Popeye. The background comics on the cover were originally cartooned by Bill Zaboly, who was in charge of Popeye’s daily strips from 1939 to 1959, after the death of Elzie Segar. Lamps from this range are intended for adult use only.
The image of Popeye in the foreground is taken from the opening cartoon of the Popeye strips by Bud Sagendorf. He began his artistic career in the school of Segar and, after collaborating on the Popeye comics and Sunday comics, he produced the daily strips from 1959 for over thirty years.
Each BRUNO lamp cover is made via a long artisanal process which starts with a digital print on a leather-like substrate. Thanks to an aluminium mould and the use of high-frequency techniques, the drawing is arranged on three different levels. The result is a material bas-relief where the comics constitute the background to the images in the foreground. Both front covers are made of thermoplastic rubber moulding on metal plate to ensure a contrasting effect.
