Cachalot

Cachalot is a portable acrylic resin lamp designed by Yoshiki Matsuyama that recalls the animal in its name and shape. A light that can softly reside with the heart in a dark, lonely space during the night. When I was imagining such light, a single whale slowly swimming across the ocean came to mind. The presence of just the single whale can bring calmness and warmth to the heart and slow down the passing of time, even in the dark cold ocean surrounded by silence. This lighting object embodies such elements of life. With the combination of delicate light created by fine metalworking and the vast yet soft line created by the sculptural silhouette, it softly floats in the night space as a quiet and calm light. Cachalot's light source is composed of extremely fine details made possible by precise metalworking. The rod, which radiates warm light as if to symbolize life, is like a filament with a modern interpretation, yet designed to have warmth in its radiation so that it is not too bright and is fit for dining and working environments. Every component of the light source, from the conduit connecting the LEDs to the fixing screws, is positioned as an element of the design, creating an elaborate detail reminiscent of an antique model sailing ship. The light creates a contrasting impression with the smooth silhouette of the shade while also harmonizing as a single light object, bringing a delicate and soft light to the space. “Animals”, a motif from nature, have been cited in numerous ways since ancient times to add color to peopleʼs lives. In daytime, the sculptural form of Cachalot will become a transparent, calming object in the natural light by the window that casts a pale shadow. We did not try to faithfully reproduce the animalʼs body, nor try to deform it in a cute way or recreate a character. The aim was to express the essence of its form in the most simplistic way possible, so that it functions as a gentle light that can act as an accent in environments such as the living room, the bedroom, and the study. When placed on a windowsill, shelf, or a table, it will enrich the living environment by harmonizing well with the other objects such as books and flowers.
